Heat and the Sun Staying Hydrated
Part 1 of 6 parts

By: Wanda Malmsbury, Pro Bass Angler
Have you ever been out walking, running or participating in any activity and felt your mouth become so dry you cannot even spit? Dehydration in the summer heat and humidity is just as important to anglers as it is to any other professional athlete. Anglers are Professional Athletes.

Dehydration and heat injury are potentially very serious consequences of competing in outdoor sports in the heat. No one knows the exact number of athletes treated each year for dehydration, but it is the most common ailment treated in emergency rooms. Almost all athletes are dehydrated to some degree when they finish. The longer the competition the bigger the problem. The purpose of this article is to familiarize you with conditions that lead to dehydration and heat illness, and to show you ways to prevent it.

Thermal regulation As can be seen in figure 1, body temperature is raised by environmental conditions and exercising muscle. Cooling is accomplished primarily by the evaporation of sweat. The most important barrier against effective cooling is humidity.

Electrolytes An important ingredient in everyones body we loose them as we sweat. You will find a heavy concentration of salt on your skin as you become more and more dehydrated. Some people experience muscle cramps or spasms in their arms and/or legs. They can experience headaches, abdominal cramping, light-headedness, weakness or dizziness.

You can replace electrolytes in various ways; I have been using pedialyte, water and Gatorade for a while now. They are all available at any local grocery store.

Don't mistake dehydration with heat exhaustion they are not the same problem!!! Heat exhaustion has symptoms of general weakness, headache, dizziness, low blood pressure and elevated internal temperature up to 104°

Both are treated in the same manner, get out of the sun, start pushing more fluids and eat a salty food. I personally eat salted almonds and potato chips while out in the heat and sun.
